2000年代はほぼ二桁成長したのだが、欧州危機もあり、今は5.3%にまで落ち込んでいるそうだ。もともと巨大な貧困層やカースト制度をはじめとする社会矛盾を抱える社会で、経済成長が七難を隠していただけに政治的な混乱が予期されるそうだ。特にデモグラフィックな問題として、あと数年で巨大な若者集団が就労年齢を迎えるそうで、この時に経済が調子が悪いと巨大な失業者を生むことになり、社会情勢の不安定化が懸念されるとのこと。
